A widely used guideline is the '25x Rule': multiply your expected annual retirement spending by 25 to find your target nest egg. This is derived from the 4% safe withdrawal rate — the research-backed amount you can withdraw annually with a high probability of not running out of money over 30 years.
The 4% rule (from the Trinity Study, 1998) states that retirees can withdraw 4% of their portfolio in the first year of retirement, then increase withdrawals with inflation each year, and have a very high probability of not outliving their money over a 30-year retirement.
Historically, the US stock market (S&P 500) has returned around 10% nominally or 7% in real (inflation-adjusted) terms per year over the long term. For a balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds, 5–6% real return is a reasonable assumption. This calculator uses nominal returns; subtract 2–3% for a real-return estimate.
